Logo for Geneva Miller, Writer
Geneva Miller is a professional writer in Bandon, Oregon. She first contacted me to inquire if she could contribute posts to the blog of my southern Oregon art promotion site, www.soartists.com, in return for a listing. I happily obliged, and she has written some wonderful posts for us about artists and art events in her area. Who knew this would eventually lead to being chosen to design the logo for Geneva Miller, Writer?!
After we had established our relationship, Geneva began asking if I could help her with various tasks. I helped her register and point a domain for one of her clients in 2014. In January 2015 we worked up a standard web package proposal template so I could submit proposals for new websites for her clients. Then I helped her register and point her own domain in May 2015. She got me the job to completely redesign the new patient form packet for Coast Health Care in late 2015. But the most creative and rewarding job she has brought me was that of designing her logo for Geneva Miller, Writer…and then designing her business card.
We started working on the new logo for Geneva Miller, Writer in mid-2013. We went through numerous fonts before we found a handful of finalists. Geneva had a vision, though it was not complete and evolved as we worked together. Since her last name begins with “M” and writer of course with “W”, her idea was to do something with a chevron pattern that would evoke the image of pages in a book. I did a lot of research on chevron patterns, and after finding several concepts that looked good, I combined them in various ways with her monogram. That went pretty well, but she decided we should try this with her full name. I created another round of options and though it wasn’t true to her original idea, one of them hit the nail on the head. From there it was all about getting the spacing and the colors just right. Then she hit a snag in her work schedule and was too busy to continue working with me until February 2014.
When we resumed work on the logo for Geneva Miller, Writer, she’d had a lot of time to think about it and look over the design ideas where we had left off. We got a lot of work done off and on through April, finalizing the logo design. It came out elegant, with an eyecatching design and a lovely movement to it. We even got so far as exporting a series of proofs for the front and back of her new business card, incorporating the new logo for Geneva Miller, Writer. Then she got busy again, (and so did I!).
Business Card with New Logo for Geneva Miller
Once again, by the time we were both ready to resume work on Geneva’s business cards she’d had time to look at the proofs, have a beautiful portrait of herself made, and carefully think through the elements of her card. We completed the design in July 2014 and she had her business cards printed. They are minimalist, elegant, and effective. Just like Geneva.
Website Logo for Geneva Miller
I didn’t know this right away, but one day I happened to visit Geneva’s website and what a wonderful surprise! There I saw how she was using the logo for Geneva Miller, Writer. In addition to placing it in the top left corner and as her website icon, she had incorporated it into the “loading” icon for her site, which appears briefly when you navigate from page to page. It’s so cool to see the logo I designed being used this way! And it didn’t hurt to be reminded that I gave her a bit of a hand with her domain as well.
In April of 2016 Geneva contacted me to ask if I’d be willing to make a change in her business card. By then her domain had been online for about a year, she had been using her @genevamillerwriter.com email address, and she had run out of business cards. It was time to add her domain and new email address to the card. I was delighted that she was so happy with her logo and business card that she wanted to update it for a new order of cards! Both the website and business cards have an understated sophistication—rare for a writer—that makes me proud to have brought the concept for Geneva Miller’s logo design to life. Thank you so much, Geneva!
